MPI 51 with klyball separator?

I have my C4P fully working with the data separator and a Gotek or 360k 5.25 drive. all seems to work well.
I also have a couple of MPI B51 drives from the C4P drive expansion with the separator board on them. I have tried the original drive connector and MPI drives with the C4P (no klyball, of course) and I cannot get them to read/boot. I hooked the MPI drives WITH THEIR DATA SEPARATOR INSTALLED to my greaseweazle and can successfully read and write an OSI .scp image. this disk seems to have data after the write, but I cannot get it to boot with the klyball separator.
I assume this has to do with the MPI having it's own separator.
I'd like to get the drive(s) working with the klybal since I know it works, and it seems the MPI drives are basically functional.
any way to get there? or other diagnostics I can try to get the MPI drives working?
thank you
